I often get questions from customers about using wireless – for their home and also at Wifi hotspots such as Starbucks, McDonalds, hotels, and airports.  They want to know why Wi-fi security is important and why they should care if the probability of being hacked is very low.

I have some customers that would never use wireless at their home and others that have wide open wireless systems for the entire world to use.  Five to eight years ago, most home wireless systems were wide open – no security.  Today, at least 90% of home systems have the best security enabled – WPA2.  I have seen this from personal experience by driving around neighborhoods with my Wifi snooping equipment.

Using good security practices for Wifi systems is kind of like buying life insurance.  What is the probability that a 30 year old male is going to die in the next year?  The actuary tables show that it is an extremely low probability – that is why term life insurance for a young person is so inexpensive.  If the probability of death is low, then why do young people purchase life insurance?  The answer – to be prepared for that low probability – if it should happen – because not being prepared could have disastrous financial results.  The same logic applies to computer security.

Here is a link to a very good article about wireless security- from a security professional.
